While we love the R&B and soul music of yesterday and today, we're also looking ahead to what R&B/soul music will sound like in the future (hey, it says it right there in the tagline). As we celebrate our birthday all month long, we'd be remiss if we didn't give you a preview of what's to come. Enter ever-talented NYC-based turntablist DJ Tara. She wowed up back in the spring with her Spring In My Step mix, so we knew she'd be the perfect addition to The Mixologists crew.

It's clear that DJ Tara knows what's up, as she's created Vivid, a mix sure to get you dancing as you look forward to what's coming down the pike. With her inclusion of bangers from folks like Tinashe, The Internet, Maxwell, Chris Turner, Trackademicks,Miguel and even Sade alongside flips from Pomo, Moon Boots, aywy. & Sh?m andMachinedrum, we think you'll agree that the future is looking rather bright.

If you're liking the flow that DJ Tara's assembled, you can see the master at work at two events in New York City this weekend. First, she'll be spinning at Brooklyn Tap House during the finale party for the Makossa BK Cookout on Saturday (August 23rd). The event is free, but you must RSVP to attend. On Sunday (August 24th), she'll be spinning at theAll GRRRL Grill BBQ at Brooklyn's Project Parlor from 2 PM-8 PM. This event, too, is no cover, but it's a fundraiser for the Safe Homes Project, so come prepared to give.

For all those not in the New York City area, be prepared to be amazed by the sounds of tomorrow today when you take a listen to Vivid and grab the free download.

Ibeyi, 'River'
August 07, 2014by ANASTASIA TSIOULCAS • The video for Ibeyi's song "River" is, frankly, more than a little unsettling. Twin sisters take turns staring flatly into the camera, singing expressionlessly, in between being repeatedly submerged underwater. Are we witnessing a baptism or a drowning? It's unclear. But the song is so darkly beautiful and beguiling that I've been watching it non-stop.

This emerging duo, whose name is pronounced "ee-bey-ee", is comprised of the 19-year-old, French-Cuban twin sisters Naomi and Lisa-Kainde Díaz. They're the daughters of the groundbreaking Cuban percussionist Miguel "Anga" Diaz, and they root their sound in the Yoruba traditions they inherited from their father. (Their band name actually means "twins" in Yoruba — and twins are both astoundingly common in West Africa and especially prized in Yoruba culture.) "River"'s bed is a deep percussion groove — Naomi plays the wooden-box cajónand the double-headed, hourglass-shaped batá— but the duo's voices float sweetly above the drums, edged with the faintest hint of metallic overtones. Though they're based in France, the Díaz sisters sing "River" mostly in English, before raising their voices up in the Yoruba language in a paean to Oshun, the Yoruba river orishaspirit and the patron deity of Cuba in the Afro-Caribbean Yoruba tradition. Ibeyi is brand-new to the scene (they are signed to the record label XL, the home of Vampire Weekend and Adele, with only a digital EP out now), but I can't wait to soak up more of their music.
