You are late. Society has been at this point for decades and possibly since there have been celebrities. They are called "stars" for a reason. People have literally worshipped stars for ages. Now when you have a living, breathing manifestation that represents a "star", it isn't surprising that people would worship these celebrities as such. Disgusting? Yes. New or surprising? No.
