I've clearly been out the loop with wrestling for a bit, but why exactly is there so much hate for Roman Reigns? I guess specifically from neckbeards cause women and kids seem to like him.
I get the idea of not liking him being super pushed, but this goes beyond regular fan discord. Folks got genuine hate for the dude.
I don't even like Roman Reigns but from what I've gathered from reading a lot of these opinions it seems that most of the hate Reigns gets isn't even about anything he's done/hasn't done. Reigns is just a proxy for WWE. Their beef is with WWE. This then begs the question why do they have a beef with WWE? My answer to that question is the people like the guy who was quoted in the OP are marks. I'll break down why I think they're marks in 3 points.
1. They're marks because they genuinely believe that Vince McMahon is the character he plays on TV. He is the evil megalomaniac that happens to run a wrestling promotion. In this narrative instead of fukking with Stone Cold, Vince (and by extension WWE) is actively fukking with them. That's why dudes start their long rants talking about how they hate Vince even though he's done nothing to them. That's why they always mention how much they hate Kevin Dunn even though none of them could point him out in a police line-up. They're wrapped firmly in their feelings because they think that WWE are this evil empire that they need to combat. Roman comes into this because when Vince started looking for Cena's successor he picked Roman ahead of their choices CM Punk and Daniel Bryan. At that point Reigns became the barrier between that group of fans and what they want (seeing their favourites at the top). Punk and Bryan left the scene (for different reasons) but this group picked the next set of (mostly Indy developed) guys that they'd rather see instead of Reigns at the top so they could stick it to Vince.
2. These guys are marks are because they internalised all of those "everything I do I do for the fans" and "I've sacrificed x, y and z and I've shed so much blood for you" promos that whiny bytch babyfaces like Dreamer mastered and that you hear 4 times a night at every local Indy show. Dudes think the show is about them and that's why they don't even behave like normal consumers. A normal consumer would just tune out and spend their money elsewhere but these guys have such a strange sense of self-importance that instead of finding and supporting a product that would book talent in the manner they'd like they'd rather persist with WWE, spend money on the WWE network, go to shows, buy merchandise etc so they can turn around and complain and play babyface whilst positioning WWE as the heel.
3. They're marks because they got lost in the sauce with the backstage bullshyt. The guys like they person quoted in the OP are the same dudes who frequent wrestlingforum and r/squaredcircle who spend their money on wrestling podcasts and Meltzer and they lose track of the fact that these things are supposed to inform fans and not be parallel storylines and products. Dudes lost track of the fact that wrestling is supposed to be fun. The heel shows his ass and you cheer the babyface on as they beat the heel's ass and you move on with your life until the next episode. These guys spend money on all of this extra shyt and then spend their time contemplating how high management is on wrestler X and how many times wrestler P was paid in hot dogs when they were on the Indies instead of just enjoying the show or finding a show they enjoy.
Because these guys are whiny marks and they're too emotional about this shyt they end up creating double standards to justify their hate. They'll say Reigns shouldn't be pushed because of his look due to the "fact" that he only wears the Shield attire to hide that he's fat then they'll turn around and stan Kevin Owens. Dude in the OP says that they should chant "this is wrestling" when Ambrose is in the ring yet they should turn their back on Reigns even though Ambrose can't even throw a punch despite being in the business for so long. This shyt is ridiculous.
