120hz is just marketing bullshyt. the truth is as long as the TV's refresh rate is a multiple of 24 or has a 24fps cinema mode that doesn't use what's called 3:2 pulldown the display being 120hz is irrelevant.

3:2 pulldown is when 24fps content is converted to a 60hz set. a 60hz sets show 60 frames per second and the tv just duplicates the frames to fill out the 60hz but with 24fps content to match the 60hz since its not an even multiple one frame is held shorter than the others to fill it out. that's judder.

with a 120hz set the frames are duplicated evenly so no judder. now the "soap opera effect" is when the tv starts combining and inventing frames to fill out its refresh rate instead of showing duplicate frames. the "soap opera effect" isn't 120hz its just when the TV shows something from a source that doesn't have a matching frame rate either it can duplicate the frames to fill out its frame rate or it can invent frames by looking at the previous and the next frame and combining them to fill it out.

also note that turning that on when playing a game introduces input lag because those aren't real game frames the tv is displaying.

anybody can feel free to correct me if i'm wrong but this is my understanding of all this.

Plasma are the best, they have a 600hz refresh rate
more marketing bullshyt. plasma TVs have a faster response time than LCD TVs which is why they handle motion better. all these hz numbers are worthless in the respect that most of the content you're putting on these TVs are either 30fps, 60fps, or 24fps. all the extra frames are filled with duplicates. they could have a 900hz set and the frame duplication would still end up looking the same to you unless they start using motion interpolation.

either the frames are duplicated evenly for smoothness or duplicated unevenly which creates judder because you notice the uneven frame duplication.

Some LCDs/LED have a by product of the motion flow/smooth motion effects manafcatuers employ. Which gives it the soap opera effect, turning movies into video camera shoots. You can turn it down or off though

I think mine does this too...Mine is a 60 inch sharp LED 120hz

The movement is a bit surreal at times and it was really weird to watch. I think my eyes have become used to it though. Is Sony the only company that does this?

you can turn off motion interpolation. its usually called dejudder, smooth motion, or something like that. when you turn this off there is effectively no difference to you between a 480hz set and a 60hz one. the refresh rate is faster but your eyes won't see the difference. again the refresh rate really only comes into play for Blu-Ray movies at 24fps. other than that everything to send to the TV is gonna be 30 or 60fps.
