'Hacksaw' Jim Duggan. On the surface, you could say maybe his nickname just means that he's sawing through his opponents but Butch Reed had the same nickname. Instead, he carries around a 2 x 4. So what is he a construction worker? He also chants "U-S-A!" all the time and occasionally carries the American Flag. What's going on here?

His gimmick is "American tough guy"

He started out as like a trucker/teamster/biker guy
images

his fued vs Ted Dibiase vs Midsouth was basically "rich arrogant guy" vs. "tough guy".

He moved like Bruiser Brody and that morphed into him acting/moving like a goofball as it got over.

So, his gimmick is literally "american (dumbass) tough guy"

I always figured there was a lumberjack/woodshed edge to it. He used to cut promos in lumber yards and shyt.

Figured Hacksaw might've been a football nickname.
It did

Most fans know Jim Duggan’s nickname of “Hacksaw,” but he didn’t start out with the moniker. In his early days, he had a number of gimmicks and nicknames across the territories, including “Wildman” Jim Duggan and a masked persona called “The Convict” in Hawaii’s wrestling scene. When he arrived in the San Antonio, Texas territory, he adopted the name “Hacksaw,” which actually came from his college football days due to his hacksaw-like ability to break through wedge formations

Some good answers. I think we got to the bottom of it. Moving on..... The Bushwhackers. So, "bushwhacking" is a form of guerilla warfare and Luke and Butch came out dressed in camo. We are to assume they are from the New Zealand military? Back in their earlier days in NWA/Jim Crockett Promotions that's exactly what they were. They were actually anti-American heels and very violent. They had a bunch of bloody brawls in the territories.

They come to WWF and they still have a couple of those previous elements but now they are going for comedy. What's up with the marching? The licking of faces? The incoherent speech? Did they become retarded? Are they drunks?
