I have this book but never finished it. Good read though, should get back to it. I remember the Al Capone example being sick.

Anyone read "The Art of Seduction" by Robert Greene (same author)?

It's a very good read, but anyone looking for a guide on "power" or "manipulation" is wasting their time. There's no magic bullet or universal formula to follow, and if there was it couldn't be neatly classified into 48 different chapters.:mjpls:
Everything is situational.

Ya'll need to combine these books together. 48 laws, 50th law, art of war, art of seduction, the iching (on situational awareness, 64 basic situations of life), Machiavellis The Prince, even Astrology.

All these books deal with the flow of man, and the subtle nuances in his interactions. All things are an expresion of Love and Fear or Love and War, in their exetreme forms. Even this conversation. The underlying theme of humanity is Love(unity) v Fear(seperation)

These help one navigate through the storms and calm waters of life itself.

Reading is one thing but most people can't really be bothered to start applying it or simply don't have the intelligence to carry it through.

I've read all of Greene's books except the one with 50 cent, and probably all of the usual suspects like Machiavelli, Sun Tzu, Von Clausewitz, Lao Tzu etc. I can say there are better 'wordly wisdom' books out there than Greene's, books like Bacon's Essasys, Marcus Aurelius' Meditations and The Art of Wordly Wisdom by Baltasar Gracián(who is referrenced heavily in Greene's books). Those are the ones that I consider the best, but over the years I've read countless books that deal with the same topics.

No knock against Greene though, I enjoy his work, but his books are just... let's call them distillations of other thinkers, neatly wrapped up and given structure.
***

I've mentioned that there is no "magic bullet", but I may have overstated things a bit. The closest thing to a "unifying theory" about getting ahead in life(and staying there) based on everything I've read and my own observations boils down to motivation. Everyone wants something in this life(even if it's just to be left alone) and if you know what someone wants, you know who they are, and how to move them. You can help them get it(for the better) or subvert them(for the worse).
The rest is just details. And it's true that the devil can be very much in the details. But without the "magic bullet" mentioned above you're just stumbling around in the dark.

I think that Greene's books are more suited to a popular/Layman's audience.
I can't imagine that the average American would be too keen on reading Bacon.
