What was your exact problems with the shots?
It was shot lovely IMO.

There were bad angles and poor framing throughout the whole movie. Like I can't count the amount of times a plant or a lamp or a table or some shyt in the forefront was just unnecessarily covering a part of the screen, or he'd have Caleb standing and Nathan laying on a couch but so to get both of them in the shot the camera is positioned at an 'unnatural' angle, stuff like that. It just becomes very noticeable that Garland doesn't have much experience behind the lens.

Some of the blame has to go to the DP on that though.

The smartest thing a director can do is hire a great DP/cinematographer.

The Truth
Just saw it last night

The ending had me like :mjlol:

Simps gonna simp brehs:mjlol:

but I knew something was up with the Asian chick that was serving them. I called it earlier in the movie.. I was like that bytch is a robot. And then when he talked about all the failed AI attempts before AVA I definitely knew. Didn't know it would end that way though. Oscar was fukked up/crazy but he wasn't stupid.

When he said "what if she was pretending to like you:mjpls:"

shyt had me like:ohhh::ohhh::ohhh:

Behind You
I loved this movie. Oscar Isaac was hilarious.
And I thought the way some scenes were shot was intentional to give that feeling like the viewer was a voyeur in the room eavesdropping on the characters interaction.
Of course I could just be :cape: for a movie I really like.

yeah.

Directors and DP's shoot movies with different styles.

For EX:
Many people HATE handheld, but sometimes it adds more realism to a scene.

I didn't have a problem with the awkward shots in this movie.

I didn't even notice any awkward shots. I was so engrossed in the story unfolding.

I just read an interview with the DP Rob Hardy and maybe this will explain a little on why he shot the way he did :
A lot of it just came from the script. What’s so remarkable about Alex’s writing is that you read it and it elicits such a strong vision. So in a strange way we had very few references. There were perhaps two that came up in conversation simply because we were trying to demonstrate an idea. One of them was the photographer Saul Leiter, the 1950s New York street photographer. He shot a lot of things through shop windows and a lot of his work was based on reflections. His color work is just extraordinary. The other person was [Kazimir] Malevich, who is a Russian painter who worked with abstract geometric shapes and forms. For me, that informed very much the way in which I would light the set and control those lines and those reflections. I could make frames within frames and position Ava and Caleb in a way that would be not just visually pleasing but also serve the feelings we were trying to elicit. Two films that we did talk about were [Andrei] Tarkovsky’s Stalker, simply because we were being self-indulgent and it’s a beautiful movie, and also John Carpenter’sThe Thing. I always come back to The Thing, just simply because of its sense of creeping dread and the fact that you never know who’s who. That was a good thing to have in our back pocket with Ex Machina, because [the audience’s] allegiance changes between the characters.

This scene had me like :francis::patrice::pachaha::deadmanny:

shyt was so random

I loved that scene, that asian chick was kinda bad and could actually dance.

Oscar Isaac stay winnin'. Don't know why you gotta create fake robot chicks when you a young billionaire though :yeshrug:

but was that his whole point in making robots? I thought he wanted to create AI robots, but was also enjoying the perks :lolbron:

Androids

  • Do not age
  • Do not produce offspring
  • Do not cheat
  • Will not divorce and split your assets
Seems like a win to me :madiba:

but they do...
