One way this works is that women accept ideological change more easily from the dominant (elite) group, while men are more resistant. The only way the dominant group can non-violently introduce and perpetuate change within a male out-group is through controlling access to reproduction (sex,) so the dominant male group first spreads its preferred social narrative (which is based on the dominant male group's cultural->ideological heritage) among the women of the out-group. If as a male you fall in line with whatever the popular (social) narrative is, your reproductive options expand, but if you don't, your options become much more limited.
