Where The Grass Is Blue
Powerful thread:wow:

All I have to say is he was successful in the streets so that’s what he raps about. To be honest nobody would be interested in hearing him fail as a football player if that was a topic.

But I’ll also say that glorifying street shyt when you obviously wasn’t heavy in the streets is lame as well(not saying Gee does this)

...who went to private school, graduated high school on time and got an invite to the NFL Combine...

This is part of the issue I've said over the last few years that I have with The Culture. The glorification of the streets over other aspects of Black Culture, this dude could talk about a number of different parts of his story but it's drugs and shootings track after track...

I've mentioned this in the past, so I'll say this again to be patently clear:

This doesn't invalidate the street experiences he did have, and of course I do think he's had experience. What it does though is invalidate his "lifetime of hustling" and running the streets imagery he's portrayed on wax and in interviews...

There were dudes in high school who played sports who got into affiliating with aspects of the streets but the successful prep athletes are never the ones who are in it deep. The amount of high school aged cats who in it deep are a minority anyway, but the ones who go on to play in college have a certain amount of time and commitments to make to achieve that success...

So you're not doing nothing outside on any real level AND maintaining all your commitments and responsibilities to be a successful prep athlete with scholarship offers, let's put aside the fact a teenager isn't gonna have the wherewithal or emotional advancement to juggle being equally successful in both...

So he wasnt doing anything outside that was noteworthy as a teenager...

Alota dudes get in college and start moonlighting or get introduced to the streets. This dude went to two different universities because he transferred, not because he was kicked out or expelled or anything like that. So he wasn't putting in the same energy outside that he was on the field and in his academics, and when he finally dropped out it was voluntary but not before a Combine invite...

So dude's story is pretty obvious, he wasn't quite good enough to make The League and likely had already been dabbling around so he enhanced his contacts outside and went that route...

I just wish we were more honest about our roads to success. And yes, because of my own story, I dont view cats who "come of age" in the streets at college age or later as the same as those who were with it and active younger and devoted entire periods of their lives to it, don't give a damn how much money cats touched...

I'm 5 years older than fam but at the same age homie was perfecting his crafts to go to college, I was working on dropping out and fukking around outside. At the same age he went to college I'd already been in prison a year, when fam got his Combine invite I was yet again fighting another case...

Gee makes decent music, a little redundant but he's pretty good. But here's another rapper added to the list of late bloomers and dudes who aren't as authentic as they portray...

I'm from Louisville and got family members that literally lived down the street from Gee when he was growing up.

Not sure of what your sources are, 80% of what you just wrote is inaccurate.

OP describes Suge Knight

he didn't get into any legal trouble until death row was already popping and he shot that gun in the air at the studio

so does that mean Suge Knight wasn't a legit gang member lmao

nikka Suge shot someone when he was at Unlv.nikka was trying jack him.

and, that's self defense

Suge did not have a criminal record until he shot that gun in the air at the studio, that's how he got probation, and he violated during the fight at mgm when they had him camera stopping the guy

that was my point, because Suge never had a criminal record growing up doesn't mean he was a legit street guy

I get what O/P is saying. It’s one thing to be a knucklehead/ cant get right in the hood. But acting like you’re a certified stepper/ og when there’s a whole other shyt you can rap about is corny :francis:
This is why I champion every “alt hip hop” rapper. Even if they a bit corny. These young nikkas really fooled and blinded by the streets.

Marvin Harrison was an elite athlete his whole life way better than est gee and people talk about him like J Prince

you not a street nikka, so you can't check anybody

if nobody from kentucky is calling him out or people who know him are calling him fake, how can you make any assumptions

the nikka really don't rap about shyt other than basic hood shyt anybody can do

anybody can sell drugs, anybody bust a gun and kill someone or rob someone

you don't need any type of special pedigree to do any of this shyt you just have to want to do it

Blace Icewood is the Detroit 2pac and he from a suburb called southfield, his pops was a big time dope dealer so he was raised in the game

OP describes Suge Knight

Bro there’s plenty of dudes who went to school and still be involved in street shyt. There’s plenty of great athletes who are still involved in street shyt.

Sometimes it’s just in nikkas. Tobe and EST are the perfect ying and yang. It is what it is.

gee is a rapper lol he’s going to exaggerate like every other rapper. It’s his job but like another poster said if them dudes in Kentucky ain’t pull his card then he’s obviously good up there

I've mentioned in threads past that in real life, certain cats act different in my presence; not on no scary shyt, but if dudes don't know anything about they can sense it and feel it on me, and this is even after a few years removed from it...

When dudes do know something about me or have heard of me, certain cats go extra to impress me. I've probably been dealing with this since late teenage years on the inside, where a reputation preceded itself, so some guys would be on some "oh, you're J-Rock" shyt and go off with the impress tactics...

I'm illustrating that to say this:

The same way that happens, when you've been around you can sense the authenticity or level if authenticity on dudes; any man with a blower or who "traps" isn't impressive and every person doesn't give off the same energy or air of authenticity...

Obviously I haven't spent a second in the presence of Gee but this works with rappers, there's plenty of rappers you can get a read on rather easily because all they do is talk, you listen to them on wax, you listen to how they communicate with rappers of varying reputation, you listen to how they speak in interviews, the whole shyt...

Two things with Gee that I noticed last year or early this year: one, when he was in an interview with some white dude talking about how real and authentic he was, dudes who overplay that "real" phrase show their hand, because plenty of dudes in the streets aren't real nikkas at all....and two, the way this dude acts around Gotti, how he spoke of him on an occasion or two, is exactly the impress tactics I've referred to. Him and Gotti not of the same stripes, you get the sense homie knows this when you see how he acts around him...

Again none of this means dude never did anything, I'm sure he did but all dudes in the streets aren't created equal and most street cats know this, the same way that we know every athlete in The League aren't equal...

All rappers do is talk, it's in the choice of words, body language with different people that you get these reads, but this is also something I may have a natural notice of with people in general from running around...

Alota people in here keep going back to the student athlete shyt. I was in high school the same way you guys were. I was a student athlete at one point. I never said student athletes are saints. What I said was you're not putting that same energy into the streets that you are to be a success at your sport. There's an exception to every rule, and maybe Gee or one of these other rappers dudes named were exceptions but I doubt all of them were...

Also I'm not one of these people who thinks Marvin Harrison is boogeyman, he got a reputation from somewhere but he didn't have time to be ordering hits and wacking nikkas (which is what people say about him) with any regularity when he was a student athlete trying to get into college...

I also never said that because a nikka didn't have a criminal record that didn't mean he wasn't outside, so cats on these two points are reaching at shyt I didn't say...

"It's only entertainment" - JAY-Z (Ignorant shyt, 2007)

Why is it that this aspect of the entertainment industry is so hard to grasp for hip hop consumers ? If you see Will Smith in real life and he's not wearing a black suit and black shades ready to fight aliens, are you going to go..."fukk Will Smith he ain't really on that Men In Black shyt in real life"

NO, because we understand he's playing a ROLE.

99.9% of these rappers are playing a role. Once you understand that small but crucial point it makes your listening so much easier.

His whole image fake to me. He down with dem Volks. Suddenly he adopted the drugged out hoodrich zombie look. Can barely close his mouth cuz his caps ill fitting

He playing a role to be fama-os. He telling who he down with in his moniker.

Whole label questionsble to me. From Yo Gotti to 42dugg.

I read dugg graduated from some private school in Texas. And him and lil baby bonded over slam poetry (not over shooting dice).
