Elaborate.

Nothing really to elaborate on. I've been down in Alabama and Mississippi doing research for some things I'm writing on the split between Black politics and Black popular culture and the way that has been represented in the media over the years (it's coursework. I believe I mentioned this at some point), and as a part of that, I was a part of a program that celebrates the heritage and history of the Southern Civil Rights Movement (even though I'm doing a negative critique of it).

Long story short, many, MANY congressmen, government officials, and ex-civil rights crusaders were there, with Sharon Malone (Holder's wife) being one of that group that I actually got to talk to for a bit.

Two unrelated notes:

1. Nothing of the actual flow and circumstance of Black social or political life and how it relates to political life in general was actually discussed during the program, despite all protestations toward trying to create the foundation for a better future for Blacks (and other races and cultures in general) in that political and social life. Nor were there any real critiques of Obama's administration. Being in the presence of Washington's elite and those Civil Rights leaders who have integrated into those circles was truly like being hermetically sealed off from the world for 5 and a half days.

2. I also had about 3 too many encounters with Eric Cantor, but that's a story for another time.

Was Cantor as much of a dikkhead in person as he appears to be on tv?

Come on now...you can't throw that out there like that and not tell us? :youngsabo:

Let me put it this way: Cantor may have been the least interested person I've ever seen doing anything or going anywhere, given social context. What I mean by that is basically this: He did NOT want to be there, it was obviously only for publicity and goddamn, did it show.

He was semi-cordial, but cold overall. Not as histrionic as his media persona, but that media persona isn't quite that exaggerated if my interactions with him tells me anything.

As for those interactions: One wasn't exactly pleasant, as he condescended in the most benign way possible to a friend of mine when he asked for a picture with him (didn't even act like he was interested, but did it anyway. Everyone else at least acted like they gave a damn). But nothing serious here.

One just exposed what I already knew about Washington politics, as there was a big dinner for the program that I was sort of a part of and I got to sit about 2 seats away from Cantor and Joseph Kennedy III and talk to both of them (Cantor stuck to Kennedy like glue for the entire duration of that dinner too. Like best friends, in fact. Kennedy was 1. Cool and 2. Recovering from surgery of some sort on his right arm, if I'm remembering correctly, so he was in a sling the entire duration of the trip).

The last (actually the first) was just kind of funny, as me and a friend of mine are at a big reception, drinking copiously from the open bar, and we go from talking to Kay Hagan about nothing in particular while casually sipping my 4th Samuel Adams of the night (and there's a funny story involving me, her and the Surgeon General from that reception) to looking over my shoulder and looking directly down on Eric Cantor (I'm 6'1", he can't be more than 5'9") going somewhere to talk about nothing in particular. So naturally, I get another Samuel Adams and me and my friend follow him.

So yeah, there's Eric Cantor and interpersonal Washington politics in a few hundred words.

Also, this is probably off-topic, so if someone wants to move this and make another thread for it, go ahead.

Man, I guess we could. But I have stories for days chilling with those types from my time in D.C. Some second hand, like Hillary Clinton taking shots in the Ukraine. The worst had to be John Boehner being orange as fukk as this baseball, dude looked like he was about to blend in with the pitch.

I've met Eric Holder on two occasions (technically). The second team, he seemed like cool people, but spent a lot of the time telling us about the lack of color and minority representation in the DOJ and they're aware of it and want more people of color to apply. Never saw his wife though.

The chillest politicians that I've spent a decent amount of time around were probably Ted Kennedy (never missed an opportunity to pose for the camera and set up a spectale...dude would show up on the hill with 3 German shepherds and bus into like 30 poor black kids from the hood and shyt :dead;) and then Sen. Obama (but then some rich ass kid got to have dinner with him because his pops had money and I was :to:).

But nothing was more universal than NOBODY liking Newt Gingrich. It was prefixed with "that prick." He might be the most unlikable dude ever. People didn't even hide that shyt lol.
