When you realize that a goddamn 18 year old did that beat and chopped the drums/sampled on it to creat a masterpiece, it makes the song that much better. When know what equipment he was using, it makes him look like a genius.

I can tell you where I was at when I first heard this album. It's my favorite album of all time and I have a big poster of this above my turntables. I remember being in middle school at the beginning of the school year because the album dropped in the summer of 90(june 19) and PE had just dropped a couple months prior. My mom bought me Fear of a Black planet because I had tried to purchase it on a field trip and the store clerk wouldn't let me. Other albums would drop and I didn't get the Rakim in the summer of 90. School starts late August. My mans got the Rakim tape and I have PE's new tape. For those of you not old enough, this was a time that if you didn't have an album or knew anyone that had it, you could go 5 months to years without ever hearing it. We exchange tapes the 2nd week of school and my mind was blown. I remember hearing Rakim say the word "fukk" for the first time and kept rewinding my stereo back over and over because I thought it was a mistake. I had a Quasar CS20 dual cassette/record player and I couldn't believe what i was hearing. Two things happened that weekend.. It was the first time hearing Rakim use a hard curse word and I finally realized that Rakim was better than Chuck D and my other favorites. I didn't want to admit it cuz Chuck D was my man, but deep down I knew that no one was fukking with Ra in 1990. Only Kane, G rap, and KRS. And all of them dropped dope albums that year too. 1990 is my favorite year of hip hop. So much heat dropped that if you weren't there and remember it, wikipedia can't help you. There were hot albums dropped that wikipedia even forgot to list.
