yes and not one classic album

so where is definitive body of work?

I'm a fan and I listen but I won't pretend dude's albums flow sorry

people listing Ellmatic as one of his best albums says enough... it's a cover album and honestly the band outdid him on that joint. 2 rappers did their take on Illmatic... Fashawn and Elzhi
only one of them got the Nas nod. Ellmatic is a solid example of my criticism. it's boring and uncreative... doesn't add anything to the original or expand the vision. He's just flexing rap muscles not making solid songs on that joint.

Your original complaint was about his actual song making skills was lacking. Anyway Lead Poison is his best body of work for me :wow:

This right here.

Ras Kass spoke about this before. A lot of dudes got inspired by what was going on in the underground in the mid-90's, and started emulating what was being done around that time, with all the lyrical gymnastics and all that. But there aren't many dudes who can do that and actually say something in a way that hasn't been said a million times before by more superior underground MC's. At a certain point, it's going to come down to songs and albums, and they typically don’t have the catalogues that really stand out. I remember Scarface saying he hears a lot of cats saying shyt like, "the lyrical individual, who is mystical and spiritual, and a miracle". He said, 'They rhyme all that shyt and didn't make anyone feel anything." And he's right, lol.

Being a technical MC is more than structure and just making a bunch of shyt rhyme. That's the easy way out. You not only have to do that, but you also have to throw personality and humor, storytelling, style, emotion, etc., on the table. When you're able to do all that, then you're ready to be mentioned with the greats. Speaking of Kass, what he did on Soul on Ice is a perfect example. That was masterful. Sean Price and Pun, G Rap, Monch, Black Thought. Lupe is definitely another one. There are a lot of dudes that have done it and dropped classics. But I've never considered Elzhi to be in that class with those dudes. I like some of his shyt, but never heard anything from him that I was super impressed with.

Another breh that hasnt listened to El at all/maybe heard a few songs. El doesnt even fit into what Ras said.

:camby: listen to the catalog breh and stop asking questions, simple as that.

We know damn well why Nas would speak on Fashawn and not El :sas2:

:mindblown:It’s like no one is listening. For the past 4-5 years I’d describe El as more of a concept emcee than a technical/battle type rapper. I generally dislike overly technical emcees, and if anything I think El could tone Dione the concepts a bit. That says something. I think some people posting in here maybe just have heard a verse or two

I've been listening to Elzhi since Out Of Focus. So my opinion is based on damn near 20 years of hearing dude's music. His people were sending me his white label records back then. I was at WKCR in '04, when he came to NY to promote WMG. Point being, I've probably heard more of his shyt than most people. And that's why my opinion is what it is. Just not impressed with dude. He's a pretty standard MC if you compare him against other underground MC's. There's nothing there, in my opinion, that stands out or is in the league of what we've seen from the greats.

 I knew about El before he started recording. Breh is the epitome of development/getting better with time. Where is your base/foundation at? NYC? Real talk you sound a bit biased right now categorizing El with standard underground emcees, the bold print especially. Who else do you think El is comparable to? NYC isnt/wasnt the only base with an underground circuit.

Nah, it's not bias at all. I've just listened to a lot of shyt. From everywhere. And I think when you've heard a ton of music, you tend to measure everything against what you've heard before. It doesn't matter where someone is from, just because I'm from NYC. That doesn't matter to me. Location doesn't shape a standard when you've been fukking with music from every region forever. My ear is based on hearing a million records over a lifetime. I've always said he was solid, but I never heard anything that really impressed me. But like I said, that's probably because I've heard a lot of ill shyt over the years. So that's what I base my opinion on.
