I dont think the US would be ready for a three man backline even if they're playing well. It may work against CONCACAF opponents, but theyll get cooked by any competent possession team, especially if they have 2 strikers.

If the US were better in possession, then this could work. They collectively can't handle intense ball pressure.

True, I don't think anyone in our CB pool plays a 3 ATB formation for club. Making them play it for country might be a bit of a long shot. I look at the 3-5-2 as being a better setup for what we have available at the moment rather than "the way I want to see America play".

I also associate the 3-5-2 with a more defensive, counter attacking style of football. Since the American attack is so inept and we can't play possession footy anyway, might as well go the other direction and force other countries to work very hard for the 2 goals they would need to beat us.
