ECW 1997-99 Era Appreciation Thread

I've always felt ECW was at its height, popularity and wrestling wise, between the years 97-99. Years previously, it was basically known for its blood and gut type of matches. Around the latter part of the 90's it found a great balance with quality in ring skill wrestling (RVD, Lance Storm, Jerry Lyn, Tajiri, Super Crazy, etc) and the violent matches people grew to love them for. Plus around 97, the company achieved its exposure by finally getting on PPV and doing cross brand storylines with the WWE.

Examples: RVD vs Jerry Lyn fued, Tajiri vs Super Crazy fued, Mike Awesome vs Masato Tanaka fued,tag team division with the Dudley Boys being on top, Sabu and RVD as a tag team, Justin Credible and Lance Storm as a tag team, Taz in his prime, Sabu in his prime, New Jack being New Jack lol, etc

2am Sat nights then they changed it to like 1am soon after.

i remember when i first saw ecw by Mistake. i went to bed early, woke up 1am catching the end of a knick game on msg. then soon after, being the mark i was when i was a kid i saw this wrestling program on tv. by watching the production i knew it wasn't wcw or wwf, i thought it was some 1980 awa shyt. i'll never forget when i saw tommy dreamer pile drive francine and saw new jack stabb a nikkka wit a fork. i said these nikkkas is going to jail cuz watching wcw and wwf you never saw anything close like that. i thought ecw was REAL.
but seeing people curse and use weapons and beat the shyt outta women i was hooked.

damn i miss those times waking up early in the mourning to watch that shyt. it was like a small cult, only few people knew about it. i remember asking my friends about it, they had already been watching it. i was late as fuk

I remember New Jack was feuding with Da Baldies for this time period, talked most shyt than any other wrestler in the league. RVD's magnificent 2 year title reign, The Impact Players running shyt, Steve Corino getting ass kicked thanks to Limp Bizkit, just great memories.

I could never get into ECW pre-97, I tried
even watched ECW on TNN, never thought it was wack or anything.
it was in NJ, my fat :cac: friend Joe Potter put me onto it when he did the ECW sign with his hand.
when I caught it on TV I was 10 or 11, I was like , even marked out for Fred Durst showing up

I HATE that I didn't fully get into ECW until after it folded. I have most all of the ECW TV's and PPV's now so it's cool seeing it in retrospect because some aspects are holding up nice IMO. The simplicity of the storylines and such. .. Prime RVD was a bad muthafukka. Hardly talked, wasn't in many complex stories but he was over like crazy.


Taz I think would have been a mega star if he were near his prime during the mma explosion circa 06ish. That gimmick was slightly ahead of its time IMO

i remember when taz was doing the angle with paul varleans the mma guy and taz gimmick was soo great i actually believed taz would kill varleans if they ever fought. that gimmick would have worked so well in wwe but vince fukked that up.

raven was another gimmick that was ahead of its time.

Nah Minneapolis by way of Chicago. Spent a lot of my childhood wanting to be from Compton tho hahaha



I know Taz's body was failing him by time he came to the WWE but they threw money away by not letting him legit fued with Austin/Taker etc if he were 6'4 i'm sure this would have happened.

There's truth to that but you could say that for a LOT of cats, Bad News Brown was the original Stone Cold/Taz, miserable and angry all the time bad ass type.



Raven was perfect for that grunge era, WCW in particular coulda used him better than they did.
