I have a project on a local rappers album, basically he has a reference beat and while he doesn't want that exact beat, he wants a beat very similar, with his own touches on things.

So I think remaking the beat, then going through it and changing up the patterns how he wants it and melodies wouldn't be copying. It's an interesting arrangement.

Is their an easy way to remake a beat on FL 12? I obviously could just do it by ear, but theres so many switch ups, that I'd be weeks before I could get it all by ear.

Suggestions?

That's actually really hard.
Try asking him to look up a famous non Hip-Hop song.

Than you can google the chords of the song and remake it.

Just interpolate the original version, switch-up a few instruments, then transpose the notes.

i'd say focus on the patterns and notes first before the actual sound. like do it section by section (verse, chorus, bridge, etc). for each one start with the drums and main sound and then bass. just make basic "sketches" for each part and put them on the right tempo. once you have that, loop it up and sync the original on top of it. play together and then mute the original. and see what the differences are. change the sounds to get the closest thing possible, play with the levels, etc make sure you have the right notes. keep doing the back and forth with the mute button until the sound doesn't clash and sounds the same as the original (or as close as you can get).

To be honest, remakes are usually the easy part. The hardest part about it is matching the mix and re-capturing the same emotion as the original version, especially if the original version is very expressive.
