Any company can make digital presentations of games. They can if they choose create demos online. E3 is an outdated relic from back when gaming magazines were prominent and the very early transition to online game media. Gaming journalists gathered in a single location and were given info to relay to the general public. Now companies release this info on demand when it’s ready. They can’t even keep the announcements secret anymore and before E3 it all leaks anyway.

I agree.

Demos can be released online easily and you can get the recap immediately from your favorite blogger/youtuber

This can be said about any physical event going forward.

I think there’s still value in a big in person gaming event every year.

The Game Awards exist to be that. Also during The Game Awards companies can announce stuff without having to line up a large amount of content to announce all at the same time. Geoff Keighley who built himself up on E3 recognized that it wasn't necessary anymore and provided the alternative to it going forward. If you haven't noticed for a while E3 has struggled with what it should be. Gaming companies have also held back on using E3 in full and hold their own events for stuff over it. E3 has changed their format several times.

E3 is a leftover from an age where gaming companies couldn't really directly engage their customers and had to do it through proxies. Now they can directly engage you as a customer from wherever you are.

The game awards is a different thing and E3 is still the biggest gaming event with the most eyes on it every year. The biggest publishers and games may be able reach directly to fans, but smaller studios and games benefit greatly from the event. Also E3 is a meeting and incubation place for the industry period. It’s not just about reaching fans or advertising games. It’s why every industry has conventions/trade shows etc.
