Anyone ever do deadlifts with dumbbells?

I know it's impossible to go as heavy as you can with barbells (my gym's dumbbells max out at 120 lbs), and I know all the dudes on this site are pro powerlifters ... but I feel like my form is much better with dumbbells.

I hurt my back fukking up a deadlift a month or so ago, so I've been pretty tentative lately. But, I did sets with dumbbells today (90s, 100s, nothing crazy), and felt great. Form was solid, and I obviously went lower to touch them to the ground.

It's also possible that I need to get back to barbells, and just improve my form.

I guess its like anything eventually if you are hooting for progressive overload you won't have room to increase eventually. Sounds like an acvenue when you are doing higher reps :manny:

Ok then.

I did barbell deadlifts for years, and continue to do so. The reason I asked was that I'm coming off an injury, and the db DLs seemed to not aggravate it as much. I tried something different today, and wondered what the impact of it would be (obviously the max weight is/will be lower, but the range of motion is increased).

Probably stupid of me to ask the IT certs/six figures/dimes only/pro bodybuilder crowd residing on the coli My bad.

maybe deadlift with 25 plates if you want to go lower :yeshrug:

It's not quite that bad. I don't have any problem doing sets with 185/205 ... I just trust my form better the other way right now.

Also 25 plates? At that point, I'd probably just stay home.

25lbs. plate increments instead of 45lbs. for your weight desired if you trying to go lower with the bar. That's what I meant.

Well, some people compensate their form so that the barbell doesn't touch their shins when going up. Dumbbell deadlifts are fine and your only real restriction is the amount of weight you can grip or dumbbells you have available.
The shin scraping thing is a problem that even competition-level deadlifters deal with. So, bodybuilders and power lifters sometimes use a special deadlift bar where you are in the middle of this diamond-shaped bar and you are positioned in the middle so your shins don't hit anything. They welded bars on the side to grip it.
You can do squats instead of deadlifts too.

Good points. Completely forgot about that other bar. That would probably be the best of both worlds.

My leg days usually consist of deadlifts, squats (I rotate which one to go heavy on, so i hit each exercise heavy once per week), farmer walks and swings.
