I work for a huge IT firm in the DC area trust me.
It doesn't even cost that much to run up a history of someone.
$100 may be good enough.

I've worked in staffing/recruiting... these background checks are for felonies and sex offenders. The only work history that's verified are the dates of employment. That's it. They often overlook education verification because nobody gives a sh!t about degrees. If the hiring manager has a relationship with someone on your contact list they may give them a call, but that's rare except for high-level management positions.

I'd probably list myself as some sort of free-lance consultant if I needed to account for any gaps in my work history should a run in the game end prematurely.
