1. Breaking Bad:
The best combination of "Quality" and "Entertainment"
2 / 3. LOST and The X-Files:
Looking back, other shows are actually "better" these. But I feel that I HAVE TO rate these shows so highly because of the countless countless hours of debating these shows on the Internet and in real life. Including factors outside of the shows themselves, I've gotten more far more entertainment out of these shows than any other shows.
4. The Wire:
Probably the highest "Quality" TV show in the history of television. Better than all the other shows on my list, but with less of the "discussion" factor.
5. Babylon 5:
The real originator of pre-planned multi season plots on television. Unlike something like the "mytharcs" on X-Files that looking back just turned out ways to "retcon" unrelated alien episodes into the illusion of a plot. B5 was even able to recover perfectly after basically firing their main character after the first season ans still stay on track.
Other great shows like "Hannibal" and "True Detective" don't have enough episodes to make the list. I almost want to add the Sopranos, but I think it fell off after the first season.
