"dream hampton has been left a bit perturbed after stic.man recounted a story of how dead prez and JAY-Z‘s “Hell Yeah” remix came about as it apparently wasn’t accurate.
The rapper’s story was included in a recent feature by The New York Timescelebrating the 50th anniversary of Hip Hop. Recalling the 2004 collab, he said: “We were working on our Revolutionary But Gangsta album and this writer, she got our demo. She wasn’t really supposed to have it, but she had it.
“She was working on a project with JAY-Z, and while she would be at his crib, she was playing ‘Hell Yeah’ so much. Jay didn’t know who he was, he just knew he’d been liking this song.”
He continued: “So one day he goes, ‘Yo, I like that pizza song.’ And she goes, ‘You don’t know nothing about that,’ yadda yadda. And then he’s like, ‘Do you think they’ll do something with me and let me get on that with them?’ But when she told us and asked us, we were like, ‘JAY-Z?! Hell yeah!’ No pun intended. Like, that’s JAY-Z.”
According to hampton, that’s not quite how it went down, sharing her version of events on Twitter on Sunday (July 23).
“‘This writer,'” she quoted with an eyeroll emoji. “Also, didn’t happen like this. I took Jay to see them at Joe’s Pub. I later played Jay the song &asked him to add a verse. He asked me to drop the track off at Bassline with Guru, I did. Next morning, I picked it up and he’d added a verse.”
In other news, dead prez have revealed that they’ll be teaming up with Black Thought on a forthcoming collab set to appear on their first new album in 11 years.
On June 1, the New York-formed rap duo — comprising M-1 and stic.man — took to Instagram to announce the exciting news regarding their forthcoming album and The Roots frontman appearing on the project.
All three rap contemporaries posed for a picture with each other. “Ya heard? Spread the word! New [MENTION=390094]Dead[/MENTION]prez x [MENTION=329664]black[/MENTION]thought on the way!,” dead prez captioned the photo.
The last project from dead prez was 2012’s Information Age which was released digitally first, then physically in 2013.
As for dream hampton, she’s just announced the release of a new Netflix docuseries, Ladies First: A Story Of Women In Hip Hop, which she executive produced alongside Troy Carter, Raeshem Nijhon, Carri Twigg, MC Lyte, Nicole Galovski, Justin Simien, and Jennifer Ryan."
