None of that mattered....Kendrick and Drake both made sure the battle would be decided based on the writing alone, which is why they both exposed each's other angle before the battle really took off

Kendrick knew what Drake was about to rap about and still decided to engage.There was no surprise, kendrick won because he was by far, very far, the better writer. Even took the risk to drop a song at the same time as his opponent dropping a fully promoted song + music video to make sure the people were the ones declaring the winner. Usually when 2 artists drop at the same time, the more popular one wins, unless the other comes with something much better, which is what happened here.
Edit: not to mention the whole industry was against Kendrick...Billboard even said Drake was gonna win regardless of who would come with the better songs (they apologized later when it was clear kendrick was so far ahead...). journalists even publicly admitted Drake approached them to sway public opinion
