drake can do his thing independently and rake in the dough..

What Drake needs is a solid management team that will get him the best deal possible. That independent shyt can only go so far.

This isn't the 2000s.

Exactly .. people used to equate goin independent wit "he cant get a deal" but this is drake here.. this dude is a top 5 hiphop/rnb act rite now.. if he goes independent = less hands in the pot.. seems like a no brainer to me.. dude already works wit almost everybody

If this is true then it makes sense now why dude blew up like he did.

So many people had a stake in his success so he was allowed a free pass to stardom never seen before in the industry.

No, we're interested because we are witnessing the slow demise of YMCMB.

So learn to live with it.

Uh, nah. YM/CM is a major that only uses Universal for distribution as per the groundbreaking deal Birdman signed with them years ago.

Go read Wendy Day book.

Cash money and young money are 2 separate entities.

exorbitant legal fees
Interesting that you actually get to see the contract that Drake signed with YMCMB. Drake's advances were not that large (max $1 million for the second album). So for Drake to be unrecouped after selling 5 million records (each of which he entitled to receive 16 to 18% of each sale), YMCMB must have spent a lot of money on promoting the album and buying airtime for the records. I'm not familiar with their practices though.

Either that or the mechanical royalties due to third parties for each album have actually added to the recoupable amount due to YMCMB. Drake didn't appear to have an excessive amount of features and guest producers on each album so I don't see that sum exceeding the artist royalties generated. It's heavily dependent on the deals struck with those 3rd parties (I'm sure established artist and producers like Swizz T.I. and Jay-Z ask get the full rate).

They may have a case if an audit shows that YMCMB didn't pay Aspire any excess royalties within 15 days of a scheduled accounting period and per the contract terms the agreement between Drake (through Apsire) and YMCMB is terminated automatically. Let's see how this plays out
