Section 80 was a disgusting flop sales wise. Why would labels be so excited about somebody selling that low independently?

Kendrick was on a great mixtape run leading up to it. The Dre Interscope connection blew him up. The recipe was a great single imo but it flopped and then interscope did what they do to push swimming pools.

Cole was the premier artist under RocNation. The JayZ connection helped him a lot, sideline story kept getting pushed back bc he didn't have any hits until he made workout. He was going to flop until management saved him

The Drake cosigns/features helped them and him mutually
It was still blog era. How much did Love Live ASAP sell? Meek Mill mixtapes? Streaming was not around and dropping a CD was an industry ritual. Kendrick had hella buzz by the end of 2011 along with ASAP.

The rest of the MJ scheme was even better. When he got to the Jermaine shyt I was like wow this shyt is different. Best bars in the whole battle. Alotta that shyt prolly went over people's heads too.

Cap Euphoria had better lines, more depth more layers, come on.

Drake put him on one of the highest grossing tours in hip hop history which put him in front of his first large venue shows and brought him exposure, posted him on the OVO blog and sang his praises publicly, gave him a top 40 feature, gave him his own song on Take Care a multiplatinum album.

Let’s not do that :dead:

I get nikkas hate Drake and if he really a pedo fukk em but this is some mental gymnastics

Why would Drake do that to a random rapper who wasn’t already on his way to stardom? There’s hundreds of rappers he could do that with in Toronto…

Also I don’t hate Drake I defend him on here all the time, but I ain’t going to endorse the narrative that Kendrick wasn’t already on his way to being a star when Section 80 dropped

No it didn't. Explain the Jermaine line to me.

He talking about J Cole and how Kendrick wanted/influenced him to try not be a pop star , ‘Stay out of the light’ play more to his black side, easy lyrics to comprehend.

I didn’t have to think twice about that bar, there bars in this diss from Kendrick that I haven’t actually hit me to like the day after, just by how subtle it is, how it’s placed, how it’s not forced as a punchline, that’s the genius, the most memorable line of the battle is the A Minor line and that’s one everyone got first time, Drake has lines like that, Kendrick has lines with more depth.

Damn let me go edit my post lol.

Explain, I only got one brain Drake got multiple working on one song:russ:

The only other angle you can say is Michael/Jermaine, Jermaine saying Michael changed his skintone as soon as he got famous(something along those lines) but let me hear it.

He was a buzzing rapper and Drake thought he was dope no more to it.

Kendrick was on his way anyway because he was signed and dope but there’s levels to this shyt and Drake helped put him on a higher level he had other co-signs in the West but refusing to acknowledge what this did for his career early on is wack.

Kendrick’s own bars Drake kept it real and showed him genuine love unlike other rappers at that point in his career, initiated him into the rap game, Drake exposed him to vanity/rich nikka shyt, he hints in this verse he was jealous of Drake and Drake gave him game on the industry.

Hit me on the cellular, thought he was gonna sell me a false word like the rappers I know
Sat down with a few drinks, located where you can't see us
A white waitress on standby when we need her
A black Maybach, 40 pulled up Jeep
No doors, all that nikka was missin' was Aaliyah
Felt like the initiation, a reality livin' in the matrix
We talk casually about the industry
And how the women be the tastemakers for the shyt we makin'
Then he said that he was the same age as
Myself, and it didn't help 'cause it made me even more rude and impatient
So blame it on Mr. OVOXO
The reason why I'm breathin' all the vanity I know

"Oh shyt, it's all makin' sense, maybe I'm Prince and you actually Mike
Michael was prayin' his features would change so people believe that he's actually white
Top would make you do features for change, get on pop records and rap for the whites
And wait, you say your brother Jermaine, but you wanted him to stay out of the light.."

If u know the history between MJ and Jermaine Jackson. U would know that Jermaine made a diss song about MJ accusing him of not wanting him to shine. MJ actually pressed Jermaine ready to fight him over this. nikka basically broke down the parallels between that and Kendrick and Cole's relationship.
