I’m definitely impressed that he responded in less than 24 hrs.. but I think it had more to do with Push striking a nerve than Drake flexing his artistic prowess.
Push comes out of the blue with a great project that includes a great diss record.Probably (arguably) the best diss record toward Drake.
Drake’s response didn’t come from a position of power, he sounded insecure, frustrated, and annoyed.
Yea, I mentioned from the start that Drake, albeit gets props for responding and responding immediately, felt rushed all the way around from how he spitted his rhyme to the lazy sample loop. But the truth is that Pusha T struck a nerve and Drake got in his feelings. And I say that, because Pusha-T isn't worth wasting energy from, especially there's no paper to gain from it. Push may have gotten backlash by the legion of Drake fans and suckers that want to stay on Drake's good side, but he accomplished in his whole purpose which was generate attention towards his album. Because love or hate "Infrared", people will up those stream numbers just to see what was said which is more sell money for Pusha-T.
Now with all that said, from a lyrical and contextual standpoint, Drake was purely in the defensive the entire Duppy Freestyle dis. He started pointing fingers about Kanye having writers as well and/or that he contributed in songwriting for Kanye (which is moot when Kanye done the same for him as it turns out), he thrown Quentin Miller under the bus by stating he was doing him a favor, and boldly implied that was the only time he done that by stating he was on top before and after Quentin Miller to which we know this is a lie too of not having anymore help. That said, there were some good shots at Pusha-T. The No Malice bar, the Infrared flipped-bar, and the age bar were good. Not all of it being factual, but closer to the truth than fiction about Pusha-T.
To me, I do not see how this is a L for Pusha-T. Pusha-T had nothing to lose, because he isn't a mainstream emcee, he integrity isn't on the line or even question as a lyricist, and he isn't going to lose any of his core fanbase. This song, and Drake's entire situation, is more about Drake trying to legitimize his worthiness as a respected emcee to which the ghostwriting thing took him a hit that will following him the rest of his career. That is why he HAD to respond. That is why he responded so quickly. That is why he tried to go lyrical with it when at most times like with the song "I'm Upset", he is lazy in his rhymes. Duppy Freestyle isn't really geared at Pusha-T even though Pusha-T is the target. This is for people who keeps doubting him in general and want to show them that he can spit.
