Then again I guess that's basically what happened in the anime.

Yea that fight was the one that really annoyed me.

The one right before you make Vegito and you gotta run though Zamasu, Black, and then fused Zamasu

Its not button mashing. The defensive actions require indivual inputs and have strict windows. The isn't a problem for the AI because they can just execute super counters and revenge counters consistently. They don't "fail" at doing counters. They just decide either do it or don't.
