As someone who managed a large scale summer camp and after school STEM enrichment program for several years, I second this. There are virtually no black men in the industry save a few sports coaches.

I disagree on the profitability angle, especially when dealing with schools in the hood. You do it for love. Money has to be secondary or you will burn out and get frustrated. Overhead costs are high. You need permits and insurance. Many folks in underprivileged areas don't have the money to pay for your services. My program was only able to barely break even in the hood because of government grants and money from private education foundations. Rich black folk used us too, but doing it as a "black thing" probably won't make you a lot of money, unless you are in an area with a large rich black population.

You are correct, there is some reliance on government money to support the business, however it is consistent income for the most part. Profitability is also subjective. You may not be a millionaire, but the profits are consistent depending on how you move.

My friend started in her home and grew to having three centers. One of her buildings she had the opportunity to buy via owner financing. She also caters to a working class to low income black demographic, so half are paying out of pocket and the other half get vouchers. I’ve never paid more than $500/month in childcare and when my daughter attended, I donated a lot because I knew the savings I was getting. Her other non voucher families move the same way. It really is a community.
