Yeah I've heard people in the New England states generally aren't racist to the few black people there outside of the Boston area.
I've heard a lot different about small towns in the deep south and midwest. I know a couple of dudes from a small town in Alabama who told me stories about white dudes running up on them, punking them, and calling them ******s and stuff. My initial reaction is "
how the fukk you let that happen?" because it would never fly where I grew up. But they said they're way outnumbered so there's really nothing they could do.
Nah, no such luck. New England does have a lot of extremely liberal (to the point of being a bit precious) towns, but just like the rest of America there are plenty of places where the residents will let you know by attitude, words, or deeds that you don't belong. That being said, I think New England is one of the best places to live in America if you find the right town.
shyt, the influx of Somalian and Sudanese immigrants into Maine caused major tension - there were the typical community meetings, nasty accusations, discrimination, altercations, and even a controversial shooting death at the hands of police.
I'm from NYC, but I have lived in a couple of whitebread states during my life (albeit the most Liberal cities within those states), and it's a very offputting experience. Quicky enough it becomes clear that if you scratched vigorously enough at the surface of the liberal culture a lot of bigotry would spring forth. The bulk of the liberals in those all-white places are very liberal in theory and have never had to test their principles and values in any real context. Once they do, it's remarkable to observe the chasm between their professed beliefs and their actions. It happened decades ago in Minneapolis, it's happening in Iowa City with the influx of blacks from Chicago, and it happens in New England when all of a sudden the spooks show up in town and shout "BOO!"
