Double Toasted and copyright infringement​

New York photographer and author Gene Geter has been a supporter of Double Toasted (DT) for six years. An entertainment podcast company based in Austin, Texas, that streams on Twitch, but also has their own website. Geter recently unsubscribed from both platforms because he was not happy with how the owner, Korey Coleman conducts business. “There was this in-joke on Double Toasted called My Young White Daddy that involves the three co-hosts, Korey, Martin Thomas and Christopher Herman as well as Korey’s mother, Irma Coleman,” Geter said. “Long story short. Herman is dating Korey’s mom and Korey hates it. Thomas is the neighbor. I wrote a few scripts that they read mostly on their Sunday show which was turned into classic radio show serials by another Double Toasted supporter named Hanan Bismuth aka Harry Bollsek on his YouTube channel. It was all in fun at that time.”
Bismuth took one of Geter’s scripts and animated it. It was loved by the DT community including the co-hosts. Coleman hired and contracted Bismuth to animate new episodes of My Young White Daddy to go on DT’s Patreon and YouTube channels. “Bismuth used another one of my previous scripts which is still on Patreon although a DMCA takedown notice was issued,” explained Geter. “And supposedly, the animation will still go on DT’s YouTube channel in the near future. My script was turned into monetary gain and I’d never signed anything for this to happen or had a say in it. Patreon replied back to me and stated, ‘It is our policy to allow the creator a brief opportunity to reform or remove the claimed works. If they are not able to address this claim in a timely manner, Patreon will suspend the page/post(s). We’ve found this approach helps tremendously in educating our creators on copyright issues.’ Would Korey have done this to Michael Trapson or T-Pain? Content is more important than doing the right thing.”
Geter continued, “After Korey saw my post on DT’s Reddit group expressing the issue, I heard that he wanted to silence me and have the post removed. He had the nerve to email me and ask me if 'everything okay?’ I am not cool with copyright infringement which have fines up to $250,000. I have faced this problem before throughout the years. I have a beautiful photo of 2Pac sitting at a table talking with Jada Pinkett Smith. It is always reposted in articles like Heavy.com without my permission. E-zines like Fentress Fanzine used a photo without finding out if they can. Even some of my own models, will have my work published although they signed contracts. It’s either these sites will post my work and credit me without my permission and with no compensation or post my work and not credit me at all like singer Mya, who I met a few times and interviewed once. One time, it was Vibe magazine. They printed one of my photos and they almost didn’t pay me. Also, some of my books are illegally sold on scammy platforms.”
Coleman has been critiqued by his own community for shady practices in the past. “I have seen some winners of one of the shows, Whaddya Know,” Geter said, “remind Korey to not forget their cash prizes. This is a 50-year-old man who is running his business like a circus. A former co-host, Danielle Dallaire had issues with Korey using her likeness on a Double Toasted T-shirt, but he ignored her feelings. But, he made sure Taylor Manatsa signed a contract for a Kung Fu Tee Jay T-shirt. He makes sure the artists who created the merchandise artwork sign contracts. Maybe I should have known better because I have seen a lot in six years. This is the same guy who calls his own wife a bytch and it is supposed to be a joke. The same guy who degraded a staff member’s girlfriend at a live show. I can go on about another former co-host, Shea Tatum and one of Martin Thomas’ daughters, about how he treated them, in my opinion. To sum it all up, Korey Coleman doesn’t care about the people who supports him.”
