We basically live like 75 years if your lucky and in the grand scheme of things thats nothing compared to the infinite amount of time that has passed and will pass. think about all the people who have come and gone all to be forgotten.

Being in the history books don't necessarily = being widely remembered and standing the test of time

I guarantee you 100 years from now (unless maybe he fights Manny), even if someone happens to remembers Mayweather, they won't readily remember any of his fights or his opponents.....meanwhile everybody knows about Ali and can recall several of his fights and opponents, and I don't see that changing anytime soon
