Cole just kinda bland. Jay was probably looking for someone with a little more edge.

Luckily Cole found a lane and an audience, it was looking shaky at the start there for a minute.

He liked Cole enough to sign him off the come up tape and lights please song. They even tried to run. That as a single for a while.

Gave him the Beyonce feature on Party with a video appearance to boot. (This much later after he had success lol)

Star is Born feature with extended verse on BET awards.

Cole was the flagship artist at RocNation. He could rap but he needed a hit or else the whole thing would be a dud. So sideline story got literally sidelined at least twice until he came up with Workout as a single (peep that story the other day about Jay publicly embarrassing Cole in front of everybody by asking Drake to give him a hit single/feature)


His career has turned out really great despite not being too heavily aligned with Jigga. RocNation gave him the space to do his own thing and it worked

I don't think he hates him, but their vibes are too different, no matter how you look. Jay-Z has mastered the art of adapting to audience tastes and trends, while Cole has perfected staying in his lane without conforming to any of that. I imagine their personalities reflect this difference on a personal level: Jay is a hustler and businessman who knows how to "talk the talk," while Cole probably avoids playing those games. To me, the fact that Cole dissed Kanye back then is a prime example of this contrast.
