Does anyone have a greater album run then Marvin Gaye? (What's Going On - Here My Dear)

The four favorite runs that come to mind first for me....

Miles Davis

Filles de Kilimanjaro (1968)
In A Silent Way (1969)
bytches Brew (1970)
Jack Johnson (1971)

Prince

Dirty Mind (1980)
Controversy (1981)
1999 (1982)
Purple Rain (1984)

Stevie Wonder

Talking Book (1972)
Innervisions (1973)
Fulfillingness' First Finale (1974)
Songs In The Key Of Life (1976)

Rolling Stones

Let It Bleed (1969)
Sticky Fingers (1971)
Exile On Main St. (1972)
All great picks:

Miles Davis: He has so many great albums, I would probably lean towards picking a 4-album run in the late 50s, because of how much I like Kind of Blue and Milestones.

Prince: Another artist with a great discography. I think the 4 you picked would be the consensus. Sign of the Times is my favorite Prince album. So I think I would go: Purple Rain - Around The World In A Day - Parade - Sign of the Times.

Stevie: Might be the best 4 album run of all-time. Marvin is probably more of personal preference.

Rolling Stones: Those are 3 great albums, I'm guessing Beggars Boutique would be your 4th.

I really hate how underrated Southernplayalistic is. It’s like they only associate OutKast with the more artistic alternative directions they’d go in on later work. That Southern player funk is what I might actually prefer. :hubie:
Yeah, I prefer Southern over Stankonia, Speakerboxx/The Love Below and Idlewild. Probably some of their best music.

Here, My Dear was his attempt at a purposely bad album. Though quiet as kept, it may actually be his best album after "what's going on". After my divorce that "When Did You Stop Loving Me, When Did I Stop Loving You" hit soooo different. Even though I always loved the song I could totally relate after my divorce.

I hated this album the 1st time I listened to it. Once I lived and experienced more it became one of my favorites. Such an incredibly vulnerable and uncomfortable album.
When Did You Stop Loving Me, When Did I Stop Loving You is one my top 5 Marvin Gaye songs.

I don't think it was an attempt at a bad album. It was his attempt to pay off his ex wife and jab her at the same time.

Alot of effort went into that album, so it wasn't a "bad" attempt.

^exactly to the latter. It was 'bad' in as far as it wasn't a commercial album for the label, but, as she was going the get the proceeds from the album in the divorce, he just made the album about the divorce.

Is there a greater 4 album run then what Marvin Gaye accomplished from 1971 - 1978? (any genre, groups included)

What's Going On (1971)
Let's Get In On (1973)
I Want You (1976)
Here, My Dear (1978)

The quality, range, longevity of these 4 albums makes them my favorite 4 album run of any artist/group ever.
Post some of your favorites.
We not counting Trouble Man?

When Gaye was set to start production on the record, he said he figured he would just do a "quickie record - nothing heavy, nothing even good", stating, "Why should I break my neck when Anna was going to wind up with the money anyway?" But as Gaye lived with the notion of doing an album for his soon-to-be ex-wife, the more it fascinated him, stating he felt he "owed the public my best effort."[4] Gaye stated he did the record "out of deep passion", noting he "sang and sang until I drained myself of everything I'd lived through."[4]

I guess me saying "purposely" is the word you're hung up on. I'll put it like this, he went into the album not wanting to put forth his best effort.
