Do you think ghetto names really affect a child's chance in life?

I plan on being a successful man, a shining example of black excellence, but I want to name my son Demetric (Duh-Meech-Rick) or Kelan (Key-Lynn) & my daughter Saneilah (Sa-Nay-Luh) or Neidra (Knee-druh):lupe:

I know we hear of hood names affecting employment and the like, and I want my kids to start life on the right foot. My name is Swahili, but no one knows what it means, much less know any Swahili names so I get lumped in with the ghetto name crowd anyway:skip:

You have fukking east indians and arabs with names so god damn hard to pronounce it's not even funny and a lot of them are still able to succeed and do fine here. I think it could hurt in some cases but I don't think it would be a complete handicap on that person's life especially not if they are a diligent, intelligent, and opportunistic person.

And a lot of the so-called ghetto names are really European names spelled different and with a unique suffix or prefix added to it.

For example Marcus is European in origin but becomes 'ghetto' when prefixes like ja or da get added to it all of a sudden. DaMarcus. JaMarcus.

Yes. There's a whole video we watch my freshman year in college about that. Or maybe it was high school. I can't remember. But basically people skip over your application if your name is Lakeisha over something like Amber.

Edit: Matter of fact, here it is.

Edit: I also don't think many of the names are "ghetto", just black. But you know how white people are. Hell my name is African (swahili) and I still worry.

It does, check out the documentary freakanomics on netflix:

Calling a name “ghetto” is goofy in the first place.

If someone wants to establish a cultural element then they are free to do so
.

The fact people think English names = a good name speaks volumes about our condition.

Exactly. People talking shyt about those so called ghetto names, don't seem to understand that in many cases the people naming their kids that were trying to name their children something more in line with their cultures. A name like Tupac, Oprah, Shaqueille and Denzel; ain't supposed to sound like Bob or Jerry or Bill. The parents were trying to make a statement. I give them credit for it.

There is no such thing as a ghetto name

If you pay attention to every time in history blacks had to live amogst whites, blacks were told their culture and behavior was “primitive”. This is to discourage blacks creating culture and code that could make it where whites dont know what they were doing.

In the case of America,This is why AAVE is seen as “ghetto” when in reality it is seen as a mechanism to prevent AAs in America from establishing an official language that is used for communication that nobody else would understand.
