The NFL rookie receiving record belongs to Bill Groman, who set the mark in 1960 with the Houston Oilers. The undrafted wideout did so in 14 games, logging 1,473 yards on 72 catches and 12 touchdowns.
Before the whole "asterisk" thing implied cheating/being illegitimate it was literally used for contexts like this tho
Anybody else here and have a sports almanac back in the day? You look at a records table, its full of asterisks for context about things like season length, leagues merging and expending etc
Nfl records aren't as revered as, say, mlb counting records.
Here's my question. Would you consider the record broken in 16 games seriously when Groman did it when a season only had 14 games?
The NFL only has had 16 game schedule since 1978
We should give OL more credit for not giving up sacks/not getting flagged for holding in this era of the NFL.
far more passing downs, and a whole extra game?
NFL records always been all over the place because they had 12 games then 14 and then 16 and now 17. Per game averages would tell more of a story but even then there's always been significant rule changes that have helped the offenses as well.
