for some people its the only way to make something of yourself

the military is full of hood nikkas and hick ass whites. if you graduate high school and have no options for college or any kind of future, the military seems like the thing to do.

you have a paying job, you can get your education paid for, it can take you from being a child to a man, and your in a brotherhood for life.

i know i couldn't do it, i got nothing but respect for those guys.

You cant really compare the college experience to the military experience:wtf: Alot of college students come home on weekends. College students have way more freedom than military :smugdraper:

You're right. The college students racc up debt, and make trips home, spending the little money they have on gas, while the dudes in the military are well taken care of and collect no debt at all

They still do that?

No they don't. That shyt is highly illegal. You can't even join most branches with a simple possession charge or paraphernalia charge. The worst I ever put in was one or two with a DUI, and even those had to be completely closed and over a yr old. This ain't the 1970's and 80's anymore, or even 2002-2007.

I joined the National Guard...

After I finished college/grad school I was 23. I was always interested in the military, but never knew shyt about it. Anyway, I basically decided I didn't want to be of military age when my country was at war, and not do shyt.

So I went to join the reserves (not knowing shyt about the guard), then found out that the reserves doesnt offer combat arms mos's. They sent me over to the guard recruited, joined the infantry, rest is history. I never intended on being Rambo, just wanted to pitch in.

I will say this about the guard....

1. I did 2 combat deployments in 5 years so :pacspit: at anyone who says the guard doesn't do shyt. (plus secured, and advanced in a civilian career at the same time)

2. The more elite army units are obviously more capable than a guard unit, but I've operated with active infantry units from the 4th ID, 10th MTN, and 1st ID, and I wasn't all that impressed.

What Ive found is that a lot of active duty soldiers are people who couldn't handle a civilian life. Guard soldiers usually bring civilian skills to the table, along with the military skills.

Granted, you always get some po-dunk unit out of Arkansas or some shyt that makes the guard look like a bunch of retards, but units from New England, Tri-State area, West Coast, etc usually have their shyt together.

Sometimes I wish I'd have considered that.

Got a friend I grew up with, he dropped out of college after freshman year, had a kid, and went to the Air Force. I finished college.

Seven years later he fixes jets and has a decent house in Hawaii (where he's stationed), meanwhile I'm struggling in this economy to get my career off the ground (despite having a degree) due to the recession.

So yeah, shyt can be a good move when the economy is bad.
