Nah, all women were never housewives, you still had nurses, teachers, human service workers, and caregivers (ironically these positions are still dominated by women). And you also have those exceptional extraordinary women that can fully compete (Amelia Earhart, madame cj walker, Bessie Coleman).

The trick the bankers did was make ALL women think they were exceptional and they flooded the work place which depressed wages for 40 years and counting and led to perma inflation. At this point in the game, automation should have led to reduced work weeks and possibly universal income, but because expenses have far and away outpaced wages, you have people fighting tooth and nail for the few lucrative jobs scared to leave and the majority just doing busy work to afford frivolous things.

I think its better while the child is younger for sure. I believe it gives them a better foundation. I don't know how realistic that is unless you have your own business or connections. Most people don't want to hire someone who hasn't worked in 3-6 years. Depending on your field it puts you really behind. Actually taking care of a child and home is work and time consuming. Especially multiple young kids.

Having a parent that is always available definitely has its benefits. On the other side there are plenty of 2 working parent families that do fine. It all comes down to priorities (putting work above family and vice versa), what types of job you have, and sacrifices.
