I wasnt being a technophobe. I just never heard anyone say cooking in a microwave was safer.

Your reasoning isnt convincing.

What's not convincing about it? You telling me I should be scared to use my microwave? Do you have any reasoning?

Or do you think I'm secretly some kind of Microwave industry lobbyist or something?

Nah man, not at all. I dont think microwaves are unsafe at all. I just never heard anyone say it was safer than cooking on an oven. Thats what I was disputing.

I know all of us have grown up with microwaves, I remember seeing archived sales papers from the early 80's when microwaves were getting really popular and they were SUPER duper expensive. Now you can buy one for like $60 at WAlmart.

My question is though, at some point in the next 15-20 years, will we see some negative long term effects of microwave use amongst those our age who have been raised on microwaves?

Something still isnt right to me....you can go buy a gourmet frozen chicken pot pie....and it takes 65-70 mins to cook in the oven at 400 degrees. But it'll cook in the microwave in 9-10 mins. :whoo:

Some about that is :wtf:
who the fukk would cook a pot pie in a microwave?

The main problem with microwaves now is that not so much the radiation they emit affecting you directly, but rather affecting the food by messing with some of the molecular structures in it. Basically the worry is that they neutralize some of the nutritive impact of the food through the cooking process.

cooking in general messes with molecular structures. whether ists on a stove or in a oven, you're technically creating a chemical reaction

and all forms of cooking decrease the nutrients you get

a raw vegetable will always have more vitamins than if cooked, a medium rare steak will always have more protein than well done, regardless of the cooking method

That's not always true. Some things have more nutrition after they're cooked, like spinach, for example. With microwaves, it's the radiation, not simple heat or something like that, and so the chemical reaction is not of the same kind as simple cooking.

They said on this one cooking episode that green plants grow more nutrients when you microwave it with some water.

According to scientific evidence, you are actually wrong. The reactions are faster but milder:

Microwave heating can have certain benefits over conventional ovens:

reaction rate acceleration
milder reaction conditions
higher chemical yield
lower energy usage
different reaction selectivities

But it isn't as clear cut yet:

The Straight Dope: Does microwaving kill nutrients in food? Is microwaving safe?

there ain't nothing mysterious or dangerous if you understand how it works. it just speeds up the water molecules. there may be various nutritional benefits to cooking your food certain ways, but there's no "danger" in using a microwave
