I know all of us have grown up with microwaves, I remember seeing archived sales papers from the early 80's when microwaves were getting really popular and they were SUPER duper expensive. Now you can buy one for like $60 at WAlmart.

My question is though, at some point in the next 15-20 years, will we see some negative long term effects of microwave use amongst those our age who have been raised on microwaves?

Something still isnt right to me....you can go buy a gourmet frozen chicken pot pie....and it takes 65-70 mins to cook in the oven at 400 degrees. But it'll cook in the microwave in 9-10 mins. :whoo:

Some about that is :wtf:

:rudy:

Microwaving food is probably safer than baking or frying. For multiple reasons.

Microwaves have been around since the 40s (outsold gas stoves for the first time in the mid 70s) breh. If there were any major ill effects from their use I don't think it would take another 15 or 20 years to figure it out. If you're worried about radiation, your smartphone is worse than your microwave.

The main problem with microwaves now is that not so much the radiation they emit affecting you directly, but rather affecting the food by messing with some of the molecular structures in it. Basically the worry is that they neutralize some of the nutritive impact of the food through the cooking process.

This is true, but if you read the nutrition facts for most microwave only foods, there usually isn't much nutritional value to begin with.

But I usually always reheat foods that weren't zapped to begin with in the oven or on the stove.

Please enlighten us.

Well, food that you microwave is cooked at a lower temperature than food that you bake or fry. That's a safety benefit because it prevents the formation of tar and char (ie. the black stuff that forms on food if you burn it), which is carcinogenic.

Also, you're less likely to start a fire, accidentally burn yourself, or leave something cooking too long if you microwave it, which is a safety benefit in itself. And there's never been any evidence that microwave radiation is harmful.

Let's not be technophobes here.

I wasnt being a technophobe. I just never heard anyone say cooking in a microwave was safer.

Your reasoning isnt convincing.

Everything when it comes to Microwaves has been pure speculation at this point, there really is no strong evidence that it is causing harm to people long term.

Plus, they have been fairly popular for about 26 years already according to a source I just read on Wikipedia. 90% of homes in America have one today.
