Like when Beanie Sigel talked about pills, xanax, and percs, mixed with lean, he rarely made it seem "cool", you can feel it in the music, and watching his life spiral out of control, that he was lost in it. There was some bragging and glorification, but it was more mixed with tracks where he described how dark it had all got for him.
Shyne, talked about doing coke, but never made it seem really cool, it was again, like a way he dealt with his life careening out of control, and all the ugliness and demons that consumed him.
I would never say rappers of earlier years didn't glorify, or promote their own drug use, but it wasn't done in this way. It wasn't casually suggested and blatantly discussed, as if it was something to aspire to. That's how I see Future's track. It's a glossy glamorization of addiction, with VERY little to counter that, in his music.
Edit: I realize that also, as artists, they were on very different tiers, Shyne and Sigel would have never got play in an upscale club even in their prime. But, honestly, it's not just about the club.
