I think the thing was that X had been rapping for years when he came out. Dude was known for having mad rhymes. Dude said in his book that he never wanted to waste verses, so he always used them regardless. Hence why alot of veres you hear really came from old freestyles or unreleased joints.

So even tho he's talented most of his verses are/were recycled, most of which probably were written as he was younger & hungrier and in a different place mentally. Then you had all his on & off drug issue which im sure took its toll. Constantly being on the road, recording & doin movies as well.
