dj quik always gets the dr. dre "jr" treatment, but where does he really rank among dre, rza, premo?

If Death Row could have actually signed Quik legitimately and promoted him and his work openly instead of keeping him virtually hidden in the background due to contractual obligations his legacy would be seen as different. Especially if he'd dropped an album in that time as we never truly got to hear his version of Chronic/Doggstyle/AEOM/Dogg Food even though all of those joints had his presence stamped all over the sound without credit.
This should’ve been an immediate focus after Dr. Dre left. I would’ve traded Snoop Dogg’s contract for DJ Quik and then signed Suga Free

A pivot to unleashing the R&B side would've rebranded the label and its image with Quik at helm because the work he put in for those singers in the sessions was off the hook. Pad it out with a yearly Pac release and they'd have been good for a while. The way that was all handled after it went down was so strange though because even with Pac gone they could've kept it moving but Suge being locked didn't help.

That red room motivation! Anyway, check the playlist:

Insignificant posting from an insignificant poster
he's better than Dre :manny:

With a better album catalogue to boot.

Id even put timbo and jd above Dre.

Come to think of it, ive never made a dre cd mix in my life. But ive made a many quik, jd, timbo, neptunes many Plutos over.

Dre is an extremely underwhelming producer to me after 1996.

And this is coming from a geezer.

Just such a different opinion than mine, and that’s cool. I respect it.

Personally I think timbo and neptunes era beats all aged like shyt. They aren’t timeless and about 75% of them sound OD corny.

Ill get roasted for this, but I’ll take Mannie fresh over Quik. Idgaf about live instruments and all that when it comes to hip hop…if I did, I’d Stan the roots, and if I want live instruments I’ll listen to older music of different genres.

Quik just doesn’t make the type of beats I think are dope on the regular. and for me it’s as simple as that. I’m not attacking his talent or mixing ability, etc. it’s just a personal preference thing.

This is a classic track, but isn’t hard on the same level as:

Murder Was the Case
High Powered
What would U do?
Lyrical Gamgbang
Puffin on Blunts/sippin on
Stranded on Death Row
Ambitionz az a Rydah
Natural born Killaz
Real MFin Gz
Alwayz into somethin’
Wut Would You Do (Eazy E)
nikka Wit a Gun
Serial Killa
Pump Pump
Dogg Pound Gangstas
One By One
Etc etc…

Not even close tbh…it sounds cartoonish compared to the above tracks.

Quiks catalogue (imo) lacks to me bc he doesn’t have many of these hard g-funk beats that I look to when I bump west coast ish.

I’d still love to know if quik has any hard beats on the level of these.

The unreleased 2nd II None album that was recorded for Death Row before they decided not to sign with them is the closest we're going to get to a fully produced Quik DR album.

Timbaland? Yes, if we're talking overall. Jermaine Dupri? No. Jermaine has R&B hits, but has Hip Hop catalog is weak.
