Also...do any of you guys think Frollo might be the best villain in Disney?

Most of the villains' motives are pretty cookie-cutter. Scar wants a kingdom for himself. Jafar wants to become Sultan/powerful sorcerer. It's all about having land and/or power. Crucially, villains usually know they are doing wrong and will easily confess that they are evil.

Contrarily, Frollo actually thinks he's doing right, which is frightening when you think about it. Him trying to appease God by purging the world from heretics, disbelievers, gypsies and so on...he actually thinks his acts and intentions are pious. Add that to his creepy and unforgiving demeanour...you have a pretty sick and twisted individual. He burned down an entire city just because of his fixation with this one gypsy, in which he was willing to compromise on his gypsy-phobia if she slept with him. When she didn't want him, he was ready to provide her with the death sentence he intended for all "impure" people.

Well I've had the opportunity to watch a few of the old Disney films during any free time I can muster up at work. The 90s releases hold up so well, even to this day. Disney couldn't do any wrong that decade, releasing classic upon classic with the likes of The Lion King, Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast, to name a few.

As much as we enjoyed these films as kids, and while the target audience very much remains family-oriented and especially for children, seeing those films with a broadened intellectual capacity and under adult eyes makes you view things in an entirely different light.

Kids for the most part will only ascertain evil/dark themes through direct visuals. Seeing something like this

is undoubtedly terrifying to a child, but to fully grasp the context behind it and to delve further into the symbolism makes it that much more potent in its aim.

Kids know that Scar and Frollo are 'bad' characters, but will they ever really grasp the full extent of their malevolence?

Contrarily, kids will also view characters like Aladdin as pure heroes. But an adult won't be so quick to sweep his thievery or manipulation of the 3-wish system under the rug.

Point is, these films are layered with depth (character-wise and thematically) and are animated so well that they hold up today. Thought this would be a great thread to restore the nostalgia.
:blessed:

What are your favourite moments from the Disney Animated film series? Favourite film? Favourite character?

bro that's a very interesting image you pulled up.

Do you think those statues were real, or were they figments of imagination personified and brought to life by Quasimodo out of his isolation and severe depression?

I believe the gargoyles are real from Disney Magic

But when Frollo shows up the gargoyles are not alive #Stone in Life

interesting video breh

I looked at the one titled 'Are the Gargoyles Alive?' and this dude shares the same sentiments that I do. The statues could be fabricated beings by Quasimodo to give him solace and comfort in his isolation. They could be argued to be reflections of his personality, and are a happy contrast to his usually sad existence. They encourage him to not worry about his looks, to go outside and explore the fair etc.

BUT, you then gotta ask the question whether the gargoyles attacked Frollo's soldiers or was it just Quasimodo imagining so? If they aren't real, why was Esmerelda's goat able to see one of them?

I think arguments can be made on either side. But I'd prefer to believe they're fake...it adds more to Quasimodo's character depth imo.

Statues generally play a big part in this film.

Beauty and the Beast is still my favorite. Great visuals and set design, memorable songs. And it simply brings back childhood memories.

Recently bought Princess and the Frog and that's now in my top five.
:ehh:
By far my least favorite modern Disney film is Frozen. Songs were annoying, story was stupid and that snowman was simply unfunny and annoying as fukk.

Princess and the Frog is one of the more modern films right? Heard great things about it, so gotta check it out.

Regarding Beauty and the Beast, what did you think of Gaston?

Yeah, kinda funny that you didn't include it but included Frozen.

:mjpls:

Anyway, I did not find many desirable characteristics in Gaston. He was misogynistic, rude, and the embodiment of entitled (thinking he could basically own any woman he wanted to). He also didn't appreciate what he did have (pretty much every lady in the town throwing themselves at him), and instead obsessed over what he didn't have (Belle).

Ya'll aint got love for Lilo & Stitch?

I do. Think it's a very good film. But is it gonna compete with the GOATs? Unlikely. Make a case for it breh.

Haha Frozen seemed more popular so I picked it. But I'm not too savvy on some of the more 'recent' releases, so forgive my ignorance.

So you aren't on the HOH Gaston bandwagon?

Do you sympathise with him at all? I mean while he did have a selection of ladies, he clearly felt very strongly about Belle. Often we go for what appears to be unattainable. The way he went about it though was obviously villainous and therefore wrong. Also, how mad would you be if you're losing out in the charm battle to a beast?

As an adult I think we're more inclined to relate to something real. Gaston was the realness in this make-believe fairytale that even the ugliest guy/beast can secure the best woman if his personality is in order. As much as we'd like to believe it, it ain't real.

But I find Gaston as a villain pretty meh anyway.
