I see nikkas like wiz he make good mixtapes but when it comes to albums them shyts suck. I dont understand what so diffent about the process of making a album compared to a mixtape? Does it have to do with samples clearing, artist freedom or wat?

On albums they have to appeal to a certain group of ppl to sell albums

On mixtapes they can do whatever they want and say whatever they want

so the issue isnt that they cant make a good album its more that they dont want to

on mixtapes the artists has complete control, cuz its all outta his pocket. albums have to have singles and appeal to a broader audience, so the label controls a lot of it.

edit: yeah what the guy 2 posts up said lol

so the only way for an artist album to be good is the artist has to be talented to be a successful sellout and make somthing that pleases their core fan base and expands their brand

Somewhat, but it can also depend on the label they signed to and how established the artist is. I doubt Def Jam forced something on Nas. But when it comes to new artist it's harder for them to do whatever they want.

At the end of the day samples are supposed to be cleared regardless. Its just that with mixtapes they are usually distributed/profited on such a small scale that it would cost more than the actual profit for lawyers...etc. Nowadays with the mainstream growth(profit) of mixtapes that there is a plethora of lawsuits popping up. Side note- even though the mixtape itself is not sold; when someone makes money off of a song thats on the mixtape; that mixtape still is a revenue stream.

It depends on what type of artist you are and what the label feels that you are capable of doing. If you are B.O.B they are going to get you on that pop shyt and you can save that rapping shyt for you mixtape or something as far as they are concerned. If you are an already established artist like say Big Boi or Nas you can probably do whatever you want with little impediments here and there. If you're bringing in huge revenue like say a Drake, Lil Wayne, Kanye or something you SHOULD be given 90% control of your project.

I think someone like Krit may be able to get more creative control when you consider most of his features are his personal friends, he handles all the beats, and even if he only sells 90K total it's more money then you put up. Cole might get more creative control when you consider he also does the beats and his album did numbers. It's all speculations on my part

Somebody explain how Mac Miller is getting sued?

did he try to make a profit of the samples? I thought the tape was free.

I believe the lawsuit is because he performs the song. Finesse wanted him to give him credit and he didn't so he sued him. Personally, I think Finesse should have found another way to deal with it with out going to court. He's gonna set a precedent that will hurt hiphop if he wins
