Apparently she even acknowledged it in the Post Interview..."A dance we do in California"
and her little sister was killed by a crip? Is she insane?
I don't think it's a fake controversy. I'm pretty ambivalent about it, but the appropriateness of the best tennis player in the world doing a dance created to signify membership in one of the most powerful, populous, and violent street gangs in America on the global Olympic stage is worthy of discussion at least.
hmm. I had the feeling the move was more decontextualized at this point.. I saw a youtube clip years ago of some asian dude doing it on dance dance revolution (lol)
I mean I'm against skipping around dancing at tennis in general but in terms of the actual moves I dunno. The reason I noticed is that someone pointed out that drudge had it up when the sikh temple shooting started and in this article I saw dudes like this calling her out on it:

A moment for young American inner city black youth to look up to, a moment to inspire dreams and quests for achievement got polluted by ignorance. Young black kids in Chicago and LA are getting killed or shot over that dance man. Her sister was the victim of gang violence. That's the message she wants to send?
Shame.
