Kentucky legislature limits governor’s Senate appointment power
The Kentucky legislature has passed a bill that would require a governor to fill a vacant U.S. Senate seat with a member of the departed senator’s party in a move sure to spark the political rumor …thehill.com
Kentucky changed their laws 2 1/2 years ago so if anything happened to the turtle, a Republican would have to be appointed. Recently Beshear said he wouldn't commit to following that law, and I guess it's a case that could go to the Supreme Court if challenged.
There is precedent for Beshear's case if it gets to that point. If it got to that point and Beshear won and got to appoint who he wanted? (Booker needs to be near the top of the list) The GOP would absolutely LOSE IT.
