The NFL is feeling its usual quarterback shortage even more acutely now that injuries have sidelined three of the nine highest-ranked starters from our 2015 QB Tiers survey. With Ben Roethlisberger, Drew Brees and Tony Romo on the mend and Peyton Manning nearing the finish line of his career, the league needs unproven young prospects to make big jumps forward.
Derek Carr, anyone? The 35 coaches and personnel evaluators polled for the QB Tiers project consistently pointed to the Oakland Raiders' 2014 second-round draft choice as the first- or second-year quarterback most likely to reach the highest tier. They liked Teddy Bridgewater and offered mixed reviews for Jameis Winston. They were generally positive on Marcus Mariota without projecting stardom for him. The feeling on Blake Bortles was lukewarm.
Carr was in a separate, higher category despite a brutal rookie stat line, as he landed at No. 20 overall after just one season. So far it looks like the evaluators are onto something. The first three games of the 2015 season have Carr trending in the right direction, with good numbers and even the highest of compliments from a teammate, making this a good time to revisit the reasons league insiders were so high on him. But let's not anoint him yet. Insights from a veteran defensive coach who studied Carr this season point to one key area where the QB must improve.
Carr finished his rookie season ranked 28th out of 33 qualifying quarterbacks in Total QBR. He averaged a league-worst 5.5 yards per pass attempt. Still, more than a few evaluators loved what they saw. Were they simply sticking to their college scouting reports? Did they fall in love with his "arm talent" without considering how it translated to the field?
"He can spin it, he has good accuracy, he makes quick decisions," a defensive coordinator said this past offseason. "The people that like him but do not rank him higher, well, he has an awful supporting cast. No run game, awful receivers. They drafted some guys. They have a shot."
The Raiders have a 2-1 record thanks in large part to Carr, who ranks seventh in QBR behind Aaron Rodgers, Roethlisberger, Carson Palmer, Andy Dalton, Matt Ryan and Tom Brady. Carr has completed 57 of 90 passes (63.3 percent) for 726 yards (a healthy 8.1 per attempt) with five touchdowns and one interception. His passer rating (102.4) and QBR score (75.1) are way up from last season, when they lagged at 76.6 (passer rating) and 38.2 (QBR).
"The same things I liked about him, I still like about him," the defensive coach who studied Carr's 2015 throws said. "He is decisive for a second-year quarterback. He has a pretty quick release. But like a lot of these young quarterbacks, his accuracy and ball location drop way down when he throws outside the numbers. There are too many overthrows on outs and comebacks and even boots. Also, in the one preseason and three regular-season games I watched, there were not many instances of 30-plus throws where he has to arc them in, so that evaluation is still outstanding."
Amari Cooper already has 20 receptions through three games. Carr ranks 22nd in completion rate on passes traveling outside the numbers and at least five yards past the line of scrimmage -- tougher throws that the defensive coach was referencing. Carr has completed 14 of 31. Romo, Roethlisberger, Brady and Ryan entered Monday night as the league leaders in completion rate on those throws. They have combined to complete 70 of 100 with six touchdowns and two interceptions. Those numbers might not be definitive, however, as Brees and Palmer have combined to complete only 14 of 42. Both rank lower than Carr in completion rate on those throws this season. Palmer in particular has played well.
Of course, Brees and Palmer have proven themselves over many years. There is less mystery surrounding them. Carr remains a projection, and evaluators have not held back. Before the season, an offensive coordinator who did not participate in the QB Tiers project said he thought Carr was talented enough to push aside the aging Peyton Manning and Philip Rivers to become the top quarterback in the AFC West.
"He is going to be special," this coordinator said. "He will be in that next tier of quarterbacks who should play for 15 years and throw for a billion yards. He has unbelievable arm talent -- just ridiculous arm talent and accuracy. With Philip Rivers getting old, Peyton Manning getting old, and then Alex Smith being Alex Smith, Carr has a chance to be the top guy in that division this year."
Entering Monday night, Pro Football Focus had Carr ranked 14th out of 35 quarterbacks with at least 75 snaps. That put Carr ahead of every other quarterback in the AFC West. Adding receiver Amari Cooper has certainly helped. It's just not enough to go on yet.
"He is just too inaccurate on the outside of the field, which is completely requisite for jumping into the top tiers," this coach said. "I like the way he is quick in a quick-reading offense that is a mix of Chip Kelly and West Coast. In the red area, you want to put it on their facemask or higher, and he puts it over their heads too frequently. But I'm also watching Aaron Rodgers on TV in this Monday night game, and it's a whole other level. Let's put the brakes on the top-tier talk."
If u knew anything about football u would realize that pic isn't on himTake away this dudes garbage time numbers hes avg. At best
He's just a second year QBTake away this dudes garbage time numbers hes avg. At best
Your posts aren't even average at best.Take away this dudes garbage time numbers hes avg. At best
how does he gave garbage time stats when every game had been close?
Coming from a guy that based this whole thread on a few preseason snaps.I don't understand how dudes post on a one game basis to prove or disprove a point
Y'all just as bad as @JLova yelling "see!!! You don't post about him last week!!" To back his point that Cousins is underrated after a one game win streak
But he had those flaws when he was a rookie with zero weapons. The Raiders has the worst WR corp in the NFL.
I didn't. I brought up his play last season.Coming from a guy that based this whole thread on a few preseason snaps.
