Wilder Had Eye Injury, Injured Right Hand With Stiverne
Posted by: Rick Reeno on 1/18/2015

Deontay Wilder (33-0, 32KOs) had to overcome some obstacles in winning a twelve round unanimous decision over Bermane Stiverne to capture the WBC heavyweight title on Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Wilder knew the fight would get tougher after injuring his right hand during the fourth or fifth round. Wilder also had an eye to his left eye, which was very red - but that injury happened during a training exercise on Friday night when a stretching band accidently hit him directly in the eye.

"The injury to the hand happened in the fourth or fifth round. He has a hell of a chin and he has a hard head. I had to bluff him a little bit. I didn't want him to see that I was injured in the ring. What he kept saying in the ring was 'your eye is red' but he didn't know that I did that myself. I had to bluff a lot of things. That's what a champion is made of. You keep on, no matter what's hurting. I couldn't stop. I couldn't say 'oh my hand's hurt' so I had to keep hitting him with it and that's where the jab played in," Wilder said.

He probably would've gotten Stiverne out of there in the late rounds if the hand injury didnt occur:ohhh:

Wilder's Hand Has Fracture, Return Eyed For Summer

WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (33-0, 32KOs) is likely not going to return to the ring until the summer. He captured the World Boxing Council title over the weekend with a twelve round decision over champion Bermane Stiverne at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Following the match, Wilder said he injured his right hand in the fourth or fifth round. Wilder had X-rays after returning back to Alabama and they appear to show a fracture in his in the knuckle area of his ring finger on his right hand. Wilder's right hand underwent surgery in 2009. He plans to see the same doctor who performed that procedure, for a general review of the injury, in the next couple of days.

"We won't know the extent of the injury until we get more information but we don't think it will keep him out of training long," said Jay Deas, Wilder's manager, to the Tuscaloosa News.

"He was going to be off to heal up after a very difficult fight. Now is a great time to get everything fixed. We don't expect any change in the schedule, which would have him back in the ring in the summertime."
