This is a red herring. I did not say other apps did not have negative effects nor did I say that attention spans weren't shrinking before that. Regarding other apps they copied tiktok. Social media was bad before but tiktok took it to a whole other level. It accelerated the shrinking of attention spans more than any other app with its short form content. Youtube shorts, instagram reels, etc. All that shor form content with an engagement algorithm behind it has caused a lot of these issues. Tiktok was the first one and the other social media platforms copied in order to gain some of that revenue it was generating.
We had short form content before like Vine but vine's algorithm was no where near as malicious and designed to get you addicted to the content like tiktok is.
It's called doom scrolling for a reason.
