So...what's the alternative?

I find myself asking this question more and more in political discourse.

Should these bills not be introduced at all? Even if it dies in committee, was it worth being introduced in the first place?

And to the point of bills like these being "dog and pony shows"...there are better ways of giving empty platitudes than investing time, energy and money on a bill you don't intend to see through to becoming a law.

but who are you mad at???:jbhmm:

Aiight since folks ask questions but never seem to be able to look it up themselves:

It has been stuck in Committee on Finance since it was introduced and only has one cosponsor.

All of their names there. You can make calls and emails to spur something, because im 99% sure most Americans don't even know about this bill, and committees are where bills get debated and changed. If you want an idea of who in that group may not want this bill to pass, go to opensecrets.org and look up who sponsors who.

Long story short, cut out the "symbolic" bullshyt. There are dozens of bills in committee at any given time and for some of you cats, doing something that goes nowhere is the same as doing nothing. Thats complete bullshyt. Look at the other bills Sen. Merkley has introduced and see if you support any of them:

One of the most recent to ban fossil fuel subsidies. Does anyone support that? Well what are you gonna do about it? If the answer is nothing, you are part of the problem. Most people want *something* done but don't bother finding out if anyone is doing something about it. Waiting for the media to cover it is how we get fukked.

Most people are lazy and complain about things they have the potential to change.

Definitely worth it.

If you look at the history of any landmark legislation, many many many attempts were typically made before they got passed. Left wing and Right wing.
  • Gambling used to be a "hell naw". A national lottery? FOH - now Megamillions/Powerball regularly makes the news.
  • Gay Rights - are you out of your mind? Giving those people rights? Sodomy is a crime!
  • Legalizing weed? It's a gateway drug!!
Putting the bill up for discussion/for vote in a legislative body is basically just a signal to the rest of the society to take the idea into consideration.
Same with law suits
Same with "awareness" campaigns.

The body politic moves very slowly.

It's now moving faster because of the internet. Obama and Trump are prime examples.

Prolly should have worked this ban into the Inflation Reduction Act.

I mean everyone from Abbot to Newsom has come out against these corporations buying homes.

A person who thinks he can get what he wants politically by not voting is telling someone else they aren't living in reality :mjlol:

They often say not voting IS a vote. You got entire ethnic groups that don't vote they don't get chastised for it. :sas2: why don't you go into their webpages and ask them why they not voting. But you won't do that will you???

The difference is those examples all have a financial incentive behind them. Nancy Pelosi and these politicians are looking out for their wealth and limiting corporate SFH purchases would directly harm their portfolios as well as 401ks, etc. Superpacs, lobbyists would not be happy either.

I was skeptical of this from day one but wanted to see how it played out. Of course the average working/middle-class American whose voice is supposed to be lifted is ignored in favor. Then we get blamed for it not passing as if leaving a voicemail to a House Representative interns mailbox was going to make a difference :coffee:

Well why would they? The same way a lot of people saying that they don't care about the GOPs, this is about the Dems. Black people don't care about other ethnic groups just Black folk.

Just a question because it seems like everyone else got free will to do what they want...except US...:sas2:

H.R. 6608: End Hedge Fund Control of American Homes Act

S. 3402: End Hedge Fund Control of American Homes Act

If anyone ever wanted to look it up. Maybe if the Dems have control of Congress and the W.H. again, this can pass. :francis::francis:
