My take is the hip hop producers started having big money success and taking over the black music scene. After that shyt started getting overproduced. Now you don't need to pay big money for Whitney or Mariah to lay down the vocals. Get a stripper with a decent voice then make up the difference with the soundboard.

If you've ever heard Lose Myself by Lauryn Hill off the Surf's Up soundtrack, classic case of overproduction

I think this song was one of the biggest ones to help usher in this sing rap era. It doesn't get the props it deserves but I think it's one of the 5 songs that changed R&B for worse of course lol
