Word, word...

I just thought that would become a legal issue

I mean don't get me wrong, I'm still in law school so I'm not an authority on this ish.

But on the face of it, it seems like a donation to a college is, by definition, a gratuity.

The conversation may change, however, if people donated to a SPECIFIC scholarship fund in her memory. In that case, I'm sure some alumni will plead their cases. What will likely happen is ND will dissolve the scholarship fund without trial and offer the benefactors to donate to other funds or get a check in the mail for their money back.

This is what I read;

Lennay Kekua's death resonated across the college football landscape—especially at Notre Dame, where the community immediately embraced her as a fallen sister. Charity funds were started, and donations poured into foundations dedicated to leukemia research. More than $3,000 has been pledged in one IndieGogo campaign raising money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

This is from the original Deadspin report.
